Villa Farnese in Caprarola and Villa Lante are considered two masterpieces and built in the same period. Nevertheless they are completely different. The architect Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola commissioned by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese designed the whole Villa Farnese complex in Caprarola. The gardens of the Villa Lante are the villa's principal fame, especially the water features, from cascades to fountains and dripping grottos. This harmony of water and the perfection of its flow were only achieved after the architect called in a hydraulics specialist from Siena, Thomaso Chiruchi, to supervise the design. The gardens of the Villa Farnese at Caprarola are as impressive as the building itself. The Villa's fortress theme is carried out in a moat and three drawbridges.
Dinner at the hotel. Overnight in Florence.
day 4 monday –villa gamberaia
and villa peyron al bosco [dinner, breakfast]
Visit the Villa Gamberaia’s Gardens This relatively small estate (about a hectare) combines the architectural and landscaping wisdom and know-how of three centuries, from the seventeenth to the twentieth, and offers a truly wonderful view, the gaze spreading out from the hill over the built-up area of Settignano "of which it exploits the ancient terracing" spacing onto the city of Florence and onto the valley of the river Arno.
The harmony of the finished layout, obtained thanks to a knowledgeable use of the spaces, is a veritable masterpiece. In the afternoon, continue to Villa Peyron al Bosco di Fontelucente, one of the most beautiful villas of the Fiesole hill. The entire complex of the villa, the formal garden, the vast grounds, the woods and the surrounding olive groves are located in a splendid position with a spectacular view of Florence to the south and, eastward, a framing of Castel di Poggio.
It owes its name to the luxuriant nearby wood from which it emerges with its Italian gardens and, uphill from the villa, a sixteenth century fountain which supplies the falling water necessary for the functioning of the numerous fountains in the grounds and a small lake.
Dinner at the hotel. Overnight in Florence.
